Kaieteur News- Guyana is a land of many wonders — de waterfalls, de gold, de oil, and now, de magic of mekking accusation appear outta thin air Dis place so strange, a man could be walkin’ down de road, smile fuh a photo, and next ting yuh know, he de main suspect in a murder case!
Dem boys seh is only in Guyana yuh could be in de background of a photo, drinking ah Malta, and suddenly yuh wanted fuh grand conspiracy. And if yuh seh yuh didn’t do it, dem gon seh, “Aha! He denyin’ it too quick — dat’s suspicious!” But if yuh keep quiet, dem seh, “He silent — he got to be guilty!” You cyan win!
Everybody accusing everybody. Yuh dog bark too loud? Somebody accusing it of being part of a spy ring. Yuh wife look too long at a crime scene photo? She now get label as an accomplice. Even de man who does sell snow cone by de corner, dem accusing he too. Is a real Netflix series dis country turning into — but without de budget or de facts.
Dem lawyers gan smile all de way to de bank when dis drama done. Court gan full like Stabroek Market on a Saturday. Every man and he cousin gan need a lawyer fuh defamation, wrongful arrest, and “I-swear-he-look-like-de-man-in-de-pic” syndrome.
Yuh ever hear bout “innocent until proven guilty”? Not in Guyana! Is “guilty until proven to not be in de photo, not have a beard like de suspect, and not wear size 10 shoe.” Dem boys seh soon yuh gan need a disclaimer before yuh tek picture: “If I appear in dis image, I accept no liability for any crime that happen before, during or after it was taken.”
Only in Guyana. A land where de rivers run wide, de oil run deep, and de accusations fly higher than a kite at Easter time.
Watch where yuh smile — somebody might seh yuh smilin’ like a man who guilty.
