Suspected remains of missing hunters found in South Rupununi
Kaieteur News- Eight months after two hunters went missing during a hunting trip in September 2024, the skeletal remains of two men were discovered on Tuesday by fishermen in the jungle area near Awarewaunau Village, South Rupununi, Region Nine.
The missing men have been identified as 55-year-old Owen Andrew and his stepson, Daniel Bernard, who resided at Awarewaunau Village, South Rupununi.
The discovery was made by two fishermen who had ventured into an area not previously searched, approximately five and a half hours from the Awarewaunau village. Upon encountering human remains, the fishermen immediately reported the finding to the Village Council.

Police have said that an investigation has been launched into the skeletal remains that were found at Awarewaunau Village. Region Nine Commander, Raphael Rose, said: “We are in the process of investigating, we are now trying to get the persons who would have made the videos and start questioning them.” “So I can’t tell you whether we’re at the scene as yet, the scene is very far.” Rose said his ranks are trying to locate the men who made the discovery. “That’s our first step, and then we are going to go into the scene, but we are investigating,” he added.
According to a statement issued by the Awarewaunau Village Council, the men went missing after venturing into the jungle on a hunting trip last year. A formal report was promptly filed with the police, and a search party was mobilised by the village.
Despite extensive efforts by the community, the initial search failed to locate the missing pair, largely due to the challenging terrain and the vast expanse of jungle, said the Village Council. On Tuesday, a follow-up team, which included close relatives of the missing men, returned to the location and confirmed the discovery. Personal belongings found at the site supported the identification of the remains as those of Andrew and Bernard.
The Awarewaunau Village Council expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and commended both the initial and follow-up search teams for their commitment. The Council also acknowledged the emotional toll the incident has taken on the community.
“This is a deeply sad and difficult time for our community, especially for the family and loved ones of Mr. Owen Andrew and Daniel Bernard. We extend our sincerest condolences to them and offer our full support during this period of mourning,” the Village Council stated. The Council further thanked villagers and well-wishers for their continued concern and support during the months-long ordeal.
