Chinese national shot during robbery; 4 suspects on the run
Kaieteur News- An armed robbery at a zinc manufacturing company in Ruimveldt, Georgetown, on Wednesday, has left one Chinese national hospitalised, and four masked suspects on the run.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 08:40 hrs at 999 Colors, located at Lot 102 Saffon Street and Ramp Road, Ruimveldt.
Four men, two of whom were armed with handguns, entered the premises and made off with $400,000 cash and shot an employee. The suspects arrived at the location on two motorcycles, one bearing registration number CP 2795 and the other unregistered.
The robbery unfolded when Hu Li Zhang, a 33-year-old Chinese national employed as a labourer at the facility, was confronted by the armed suspects. He was held at gunpoint and taken to the office on the lower floor of the building.
Fitzpatrick Ross, 45, a labourer at the business, told investigators that he was attacked with a cutlass during the robbery. “According to Fitzpatrick Ross… a labourer employed with the said business, on the date and time mentioned, he was inside the kitchen area located on the lower flat at the back of the said building when he heard persons talking outside. Upon checking, he was confronted by two of the suspects, who asked him, ‘Where is the money?’” the police stated.
Ross reportedly told the suspects he did not know where the money was kept. Angered by his response, one of the suspects struck him on the right side of his head and then chopped his lower left leg with a cutlass.
Ross also stated that he saw the other two suspects escorting Zhang from the office to the upper-floor living quarters before he managed to escape and alert persons nearby.
As the suspects attempted to flee the scene on their motorcycles, another employee, Jian Wen, a 42-year-old Chinese national, intervened. Wen reportedly drove his vehicle, licence plate PLL 9042, into the fleeing bandits, knocking them off their motorcycles. In retaliation, the suspects opened fire, hitting Wen twice in his upper right leg and once in his upper left leg.
The men then abandoned both motorcycles and escaped on foot in an unknown direction.
Wen was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). His condition is listed as stable.
Police arrived at the scene around 09:00 hrs and processed the area. They recovered the following:
One red and black Honda XR motorcycle (registration CP 2795); one blue and black Lindy motorcycle (without a licence plate); one live bullet and two 9mm spent shells.
The motorcycles were lodged at the Ruimveldt Police Station, and the ammunition was placed in evidence bags for ballistic analysis.
CCTV cameras attached to the building have been identified and are currently being reviewed. Several individuals have been interviewed, and statements have been taken.
Efforts are ongoing to trace the ownership of the motorcycles, and a manhunt has been launched for the suspects.
Investigations are ongoing.
