Kaieteur News- Twenty-nine-year-old Septon Barton, who was initially remanded to prison for attempted murder back in April, was granted $250,000 bail, on Friday, after he re-appeared at court for the same offence.
Barton of Plum Park, South Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate, Faith McGusty and was represented by Attorney-at-law Domnick Bess.
It was reported that on April 10, 2025, Barton made his first court appearance where he was represented by the said attorney. Bess at the time, told the court that his client and the victim, Roger Vyfhius had an ongoing issue since last year.
He noted that Vyfhius had made several threats toward his client and on April 8, 2025 Vyfhius, who was armed with a knife attacked Barton and as a result, his client acted out of self-defence.
The prosecution had objected to bail due to the victim sustaining several stab wounds causing him to be hospitalised after undergoing a surgery.
However, during Friday’s court hearing, it was made known that Vyfhius had been discharged from the hospital and as a result, Magistrate McGusty initially granted Barton $300,000 bail. However, his attorney requested a reduction in the bail amount due to his client’s financial strains.
Magistrate McGusty then granted Barton bail in the sum of $250,000. He is expected to return to court on May 30, 2025.
