Kaieteur News- Two men were killed and a woman injured following a domestic dispute that escalated into a violent confrontation late Sunday evening, at High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The dead men have been identified as Leon Fordyce, known as ‘Nastyman,’ a 52-year-old labourer of High Dam, who was chopped to death, and Shawn LaFleur, also of the same community.
Injured during the altercation was 44-year-old Anganisha Newyear, a vendor of the same address, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Police in a statement on Monday detailed that Newyear sustained two stab wounds.
Preliminary investigations revealed that around 22:30hrs, Lafleur was in the company of Neon De Jonge and an identifiable male known only as “Thunder” or “Bristol” when the incident unfolded.
An argument reportedly broke out between the group and Newyear regarding threats made to her 26-year-old son, Gregory De Jonge.
“The argument escalated and Newyear was stabbed in the abdomen and Leon Fordyce reportedly received a blow to the head, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Shawn LaFleur was also stabbed, he was escorted to the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday, May 5th, 2025, while being transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital,” police said.
Newyear was admitted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Her current condition is considered stable.
Gregory De Jonge was arrested and is presently in custody.
Regional Commander of Region 6, Senior Superintendent, Shivpersaud Bacchus, told Kaieteur News that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. “Two persons are dead and one receiving medical care based on domestic related murder. We know that somebody killed somebody over somebody’s wife and them thing,” Bacchus said. He further added, “What I know, there was something brewing in regards of the neighbour’s son and the man’s wife, and that apparently stemmed,” noting that the situation appeared to have escalated from ongoing tensions.
An investigation is ongoing.
