Kaieteur News- Six men were on Friday hauled before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for various crimes committed during Monday night’s unrest.
They are; 18-year-old Marvin Sears of Lot 1 Smythe and Durban Streets, Georgetown, 23-year-old Jamal Cornette of Lot 77 Farm Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), 25-year-old Kevin Thomas of Lot 63 Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, 38-year-old Dion Norville of Sussex Street, Charlestown Georgetown, 21-year-old Shamar Ross of Lot 1667 Westminster Street, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and 21-year-old Shane Burnette of Lot 1791 Parfaite Harmonie EBD. They were not required to plead to the offence.
It is alleged that on April 28, 2025 at Georgetown, they committed a terrorist act by riding their motorcycles at a fast rate, weaving in and out of traffic in a dangerous manner, occupying both driving lanes in large groups along the roadways.
The prosecution objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence. It was reported that the defendants’ actions caused destruction across the country causing flights to be cancelled, schools and businesses closing their doors due to them being fearful. They added that the defendants also used their bikes to block the road occupying both roadways.
Sears was represented by Attorney-at-law Domnick Bess, while Cornette, Thomas, Norville, Ross and Burnette were represented by attorney Darren Wade.
Bess told the court that on the night in question, his client was arrested on Smythe Street and he was not in the company of his fellow co-defendants. He reassured the court that his client was not a part of any group.
His client was using his car when it ran out of gas and he borrowed a friend’s motorcycle who is a police officer. While Sears was on his way his way home on Smythe he was arrested by the police.
“He was not in the company of anybody, he was not in possession of any stolen items,” Bess said.
Bess continued, stating that his client denies all allegations made against him and he requested bail since there was no eyewitness or video footage of his client committing such acts.
Meanwhile, Wade added that his clients are innocent and he added that on the said night he was on the road and he wondered if the police had stopped him if he would have been charged for terrorism.
He indicated to the court that the charges are of great concern. He asked how could his clients be charged with terrorism for driving in two lanes he added that they are traffic charges for that and on that ground he requested that all six accused to be released on self-bail.
Magistrate Azore after hearing the representation made by the attorneys, remanded all six men until May 21, 2025.
