…bemoans poor attendance at May Day parade, rally
Kaieteur News- Presidential Candidate of the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) has criticized labour unions across the country for their poor showing at the Labour Day parade and rally on Thursday.
Broomes, who attended the events of the day, said she was particularly disappointed with the low turnout for the day’s events. “As we observe Labour Day, we wish to commend the diligent Guyanese people for their invaluable contributions and reaffirm our commitment to championing meaningful changes for the workforce. As we reflect on the activities today, it is hard to ignore how subdued the Labour Day rallies and marches have become. Some union leaders expressed that they did not feel safe participating, given the current state of affairs. This, however, did not deter their feasting at State House as they shirked their responsibilities,” Broomes said.
“We urge these union leaders to remember that their duty is to the working Guyanese and not to themselves or political parties,” the ALP leader added.
According to Broomes: “To the workforce of Guyana, we encourage you to hold your union leaders accountable and demand the respect, representation, and advocacy you rightfully deserve as workers and members of your respective unions.”
Broomes said her party strongly believes “that every worker in this country deserves livable wages, fair treatment, the protection of their rights to safe and secure working environments and a decent standard of living. We extend sincere gratitude to the workforce for their contributions and commitment to Guyana’s growth and development. We assure all that the ALP stands with you and we remain committed to securing the meaningful changes you deserve,” Broomes, a former labour minister in the David Granger administration, said.
