…to sue police force
Kaieteur News- Deon Jeffrey, a 25-year-old contractor of Parfaite Harmony, West Bank Demerara,(WBD), is preparing to take legal action against the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for defamation, after he was falsely linked to the abduction of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge.
Younge disappeared while on a swimming outing with family at the Double Day Hotel located at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) on Wednesday. Despite thorough checks in the pool and the hotel that day, her body surfaced Thursday morning in the pool.
Jeffery was accused by police of being involved in the abduction of Younge, after a red and black Toyota Raum he was renting, was identified as the vehicle used in the incident.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, police claimed surveillance footage showed the child leaving the
Double Day Hotel and entering a Raum bearing registration number PSS 4684, which was seen heading toward Vreed-en- Hoop. The Command Centre in Region Three supported the claim based on its surveillance feed.
However, police have since admitted the report was inaccurate and have launched an internal investigation into how the misinformation was disseminated.
Speaking with Kaieteur News Friday, Jeffrey related the treatment he received from police when he was apprehended.
According to him, on Wednesday, he was at home or the entire day and had not traveled to the West Coast or even into town. Jeffrey, who works in construction, said he had taken the day off and only left home briefly in the morning to deliver eggs for a friend in the area before returning home. He said he remained there for the rest of the day and assured that more than 10 persons can confirm his alibi.
On Thursday morning, Jeffrey related that he got up around 05:00h, to take his brother and his brother’s partner to Georgetown. However, at about 05:45h while approaching the Demerara Harbour Bridge in heavy traffic, he was
unexpectedly stopped by a police corporal.
Jeffrey recalled that the officer pointed toward his vehicle and began dragging metal barricades in front of it, preventing him from moving further.
“(He) tell me that how I hit somebody child in Tuschen, then … I go, who child I knock down? Because I know I did not go up in the west coast,” Jeffrey said.
“So, he say pull in the corner and he was hoggish towards me, you know in the way not how a police should operate, I go in the corner because you know, you can’t drive away from them because its police.”
A female officer then approached and informed him that the incident was not a hit-and-run, but rather, an alleged abduction, and that his vehicle was reportedly involved.
Jeffrey said he immediately denied any involvement and explained that he was nowhere near the area at the time in question. Nevertheless,he was escorted to the La Grange Police Station, where he remained detained for the entire day until approximately 18:10h, without being formally charged or presented with evidence.
He explained,”All they told me when they release me is that some of the information is not accurate and I am free to go, that’s all they said.”
The contractor lamented that the false report had severely impacted his livelihood and reputation, leading to the loss of contracts and damaging the trust his clients and members of the community once had in him.
He explained that on the day he was detained, he was scheduled to meet with a potential client to begin a fencing
project valued at approximately $500,000. However, shortly after his release from police custody, the client messaged him to cancel the contract, stating he did not want to work with someone accused of being involved in criminal activity.
Jeffrey noted that the client was familiar with the vehicle he had been renting; the same vehicle that police
wrongfully claimed was used in the alleged abduction. The loss didn’t end there. Another individual from Jeffrey’s
community also backed out of planned work, citing similar concerns. He said both individuals explicitly told him they did not want to work with someone labeled a criminal.
According to Jeffrey, the fallout has moved beyond financial loss; it has severely tarnished his reputation. He
believes the police’s mishandling of the situation has defamed his character, especially in a community where trust
is critical to securing daily construction jobs.
The experience has left Jeffrey feeling humiliated and frustrated. He said he is deeply disturbed by the accusa-
tion, especially given his role as a caretaker to his nieces and nephews who are close in age to the victim. He considers himself a father figure to them and takes pride in protecting and guiding them.
He stressed,”I’m almost like a father figure to them, to know I getting blame for something like this and I was nowhere around the area when it happen.”
Jeffrey has since made it clear that he intends to seek legal redress, citing defamation, loss of income, and damage to his personal and professional reputation.
“As I said persons are withdrawing their contract from me because they still looking at me as a criminal and the owner for the vehicle, he also collect the vehicle from me, because he say that you know,(he does not want to be
involved with a criminal)” Jeffrey told this publication.
