─ as May–July rainy season approaches
Kaieteur News- The Hydrometeorological Service is urging citizens across Guyana to prepare for a wetter-than-normal rainy season from May to July 2025, with the likelihood of frequent flash floods, hotter temperatures, and a surge in malaria cases, especially in hinterland regions.
According to the agency’s seasonal climate outlook, all regions, except for parts of southern Regions Six and Nine, should expect above normal rainfall. The forecast warns of an increase in wet days and wet spells, with some areas likely to see over 70 rainy days, especially Regions Three and Ten.
“A higher-than-usual number of wet days and wet spells is expected across all regions. Surface wetness is projected to peak during this season,” Hydromet said in its forecast.
Notably, only Regions One and Seven are likely to escape the most extreme rainfall events.
With fewer dry days and shorter dry spells, the hydromet office has flagged the risk of flash flooding, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas. This will be worsened by above-normal daytime and nighttime temperatures, which could make rain-free days feel uncomfortably hot and humid.
In addition to flood risks, the agency warns of public health concerns, particularly a higher prevalence of malaria in hinterland communities, driven by increased mosquito breeding due to prolonged wet conditions.
The temperature outlook shows that North Rupununi (Region 9) and Tacama Savannah (Region 10) could see daytime temperatures exceeding 32°C over the three-month period.
The agency said, “Please be guided by the daily weather forecasts and updates provided by the National Weather Watch Centre for any changes relating to atmospheric conditions. For further location-specific seasonal data and information, kindly contact Komatchand Dhiram, the specialist meteorologist at 225-9303 or kdhiram@hydromet.gov.gy”
