No need to tear gas mourners

Dear Editor,

As a Lindener, I wish to condemn in the highest form of condemnations, the police use of teargas on mourners and residents of the mining town of Linden who came out in solidarity to show their last respects to Ronaldo Peters and Keon Fogenay.

Both young men were shot dead by senior police officers in Linden and were laid to rest on April 20^th. During the funeral procession on the streets of Linden, while passing the police station, some angry residents and mourners vented their anger and frustration by placing the coffins of both young men in front of the police station. Editor, justice delay is justice denied, the mourners began simply shaking the gate of the police station to vent frustration and anger only, the policemen’s lives, the station or properties of the police or state were at no time under threat by the mourners but in return the police decided to open fire with tear gas on the mourners.

The use of tear gas on the residents and mourners paying their last respects to their fellow Lindeners was totally unacceptable and uncalled for by the police in Linden, this action clearly demonstrated that the police in Linden are not willing to be part of the solution and this raises a serious concern to the residents of Linden.
