Why isn’t Guyana’s sex offender registry available to the public?

Why must citizens go through the Commissioner of Police just to access information about someone convicted of sexual crimes? These are serious offences with lasting impact. Offenders’ names should be public—easily accessible and permanent.
Expecting people to go through the police for this information is outdated and unrealistic. Many of us, myself included, don’t trust the police. We avoid them whenever possible.
Why we can’t also go through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. Frankly, I’d rather deal with Hon. Vindhya Vasini Persaud than the police—I trust her more. But the larger issue remains: why is this information hidden behind gatekeepers at all?
This system protects predators and keeps the public in the dark. That needs to change.
