Health and safety principles and practices were ignored in declared regional fire disaster

A sawmill fire in the mining town erupted and has been burning for several days, with the latest being a declaration of a regional disaster.
Despite best firefighting efforts by all involved, the fire continues to emit thick smoke affecting residents and communities (SN April 18). Where are fingers pointing for this disaster? The owners of the sawmill no doubt, who allowed a situation to develop and become uncontrollable. But regional officials and the town administration must also share some blame. It is obvious good health and safety principles and practices were ignored all around in this now declared regional disaster.
The lessons from this are a wakeup call for all involved in the sawmilling business. The lessons must be heeded.
