-EBDCA/R. Dookie Memorial T20 C/ship got underway last weekend
Kaieteur Sports- The East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) officially bowled off the 2025 edition of the R. Dookie Memorial T20 Cricket Championship last weekend, with eight teams registering early wins in what promises to be an electrifying tournament.
Sandpipers Sports Club, Herstelling ‘A’, Herstelling ‘B’, Herstelling CTI, Uprising Cricket Club, Eccles Sports Club, Diamond Sports Club, and North Soesdyke Sports Club all recorded victories in the tournament’s opening round, held across three premier venues: Canal #2 Ground, Farm Ground, and Laluni Cricket Club Ground. The tournament was launched on Thursday, April 3, at the Farm Community Centre.
In a nail-biting opener at Canal #2, Sandpipers SC edged past Peter’s Hall Sports Club by seven runs. Batting first in a rain-reduced 15-over encounter, Sandpipers posted 105-8, led by a steady 21-run knock from Chris Deonarine, which included two boundaries and a six. Ubai Hussain and Shane Persaud shone with the ball, claiming 3-18 and 2-13 respectively.
Despite a spirited 28-run effort from Dwayne Graham, Peter’s Hall fell just short, bowled out for 98 on the penultimate delivery of the match. The victory was anchored by a crucial bowling performance from Javeed Rasheed and Mahendra Jagnarine.
Herstelling ‘A’ had a more dominant outing, defeating Demolition Cricket Club by eight wickets. Chasing a target of 106, Ricardo Adams hammered an explosive half-century, striking three fours and seven sixes to power his team to 109-2 in just 12.3 overs. Anand Bharat was instrumental with the ball, bagging 4-33 to restrict Demolition to 105 all out in 17 overs.
Herstelling CTI produced a commanding performance against Laluni Cricket Club in the first match at Farm Ground. Zynul Ramsammy starred with the bat, smashing a scintillating century (109) to propel CTI to 188-3 from their 20 overs. Laluni, in reply, crumbled for 60 in 11 overs, with Delroy Williams wreaking havoc, finishing with figures of 5-13 and sealing a massive 123-run victory.
In the second fixture, Uprising Cricket Club outplayed Patretwa Sawmills by 53 runs. Michael Subadar’s 29 laid the foundation for Uprising’s 135 total. The bowling trio of Anthony Hutson, Miguel Parks, and Mohamed Baksh then dismantled Patretwa for just 81 runs in 11.3 overs.
At the Laluni venue, Eccles Sports Club secured a 5-wicket win over Providence Cricket Club after successfully chasing down 120. Nehemiah Hohenkirk led the charge with a top score of 46 to deny Providence an opening victory.
In the day’s final match, North Soesdyke Sports Club defeated Ruimveldt Sports Club by 24 runs. North Soesdyke posted 138-5, then bowled out their opponents for 114, securing their first win of the competition.
Wrapping up the weekend’s action on Sunday, Diamond Sports Club and Herstelling ‘B’ emerged victorious in their respective matches, rounding off a thrilling first week of the championship.
With a grand prize of $200,000 up for grabs for the tournament winners and individual awards for Best Batter and Best Bowler, the R. Dookie Memorial T20 Championship is set for several more weekends of high-octane cricket action.
