– Norton says victory at the next polls is possible
Kaieteur News – As members of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) continue to clash with supporters of Azruddin Mohamed during organised meetings across the country, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton has concluded that the ruling party knows its time in office has come to an end.
Norton, during an address to the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) 2025 General Council on Saturday, said, “In recent weeks we have seen PPP thuggery and hooliganism in full display in Regions Two and Six. Their behaviour confirms that they know what is the order- their time is up!”
He added, “We must see the behaviour of (Vice President Bharrat) Jagdeo and (President) Irfaan Ali as two desperate people who believe it is the end of the government they lead. All the evidence suggests that they are afraid.”
During a visit to Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast on March 9, 2025, Elsie Schadde, Community Representative of the ruling party, threatened to deny residents house lots after they met with businessman, Azruddin Mohamed. It was later reported that another meeting between the businessman and Letter Kenny residents on March 25 descended into chaos when supporters of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), allegedly led by Region Six Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain, disrupted the gathering. According to a Facebook post made by Team Mohamed’s on Wednesday, it was stated that although the businessman had been invited by the residents, his visit resulted in a standoff between a group of 10-day workers and councilors who were allegedly instructed to create raucous.
PNC/R victory
For Norton, a victory at the next elections, scheduled for later this year, is not just possible, but highly likely. In his address, the leader of the party said, “I believe that as a party, we have restored the strength we know of the People’s National Congress. A mere five years ago, many people wondered if as a party we can see government again. We did the hard work, we went from village to village, and today people are saying we are very likely to be the next government.”
Further, Norton shared, “From my work in the villages across this country, I can report that victory at the next election is not only possible but highly likely and will occur. I am not promising you it will be easy. It will demand hard work.”
He said that there is a noticeable lack of respect for the rule of law and destruction of democratic institutions. Norton said such acts by the government are aimed at ensuring political control and domination, which must be resisted.
The Opposition Leader assured that a government led by him would seek to ensure that government resources are not used in the manner in which the PPP utilizes them, “to trample on the rights of Guyanese, even those with different political views.” Norton urged members of the PNCR to recruit young people and work, realizing that if the party does not win, “our people are in trouble,” he said. Additionally, he charged members to campaign beyond the strongholds of the party and have no fear to enter villages that may traditionally support the PPP. Importantly, the Leader encouraged his supporters not to fall for “sweet talk” by other groups that may contest the elections.
Oil money
Meanwhile, he told the gathering that resources generated from oil production must meet the people. As such, the party intends to roll out a housing programme to ensure each Guyanese, desirous of owning a home, will be able to do so in the shortest possible time. According to him, the PNCR also plans to “open Guyana” through the construction of an inter-regional highway system. “We should be able to drive from Region One to 10. These roads will link Regions, villages to markets, regions to opportunities and Guyanese to the beauty of Guyana.” Further, he noted that the party will implement a “substantial cash transfer” to every Guyanese household, guaranteed by legislation. Norton said, “This direct benefit from our oil wealth ensures that prosperity begins at the grassroot because the transformation of a nation begins with the transformation of individual lives.”
