Kaieteur News- An 18-year-old hairdresser died on Wednesday night after she reportedly grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle her 19-year-old boyfriend was driving, causing it to collide with a lamp post on the Meten Meer Zorg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The young woman has been identified as Saeeda Swallay. Her boyfriend Janheam Kwame Silas was injured in the accident.
Police reported that the accident occurred around 22:45h, opposite the Guy India Store and involved a car bearing registration number PXX 4206 owned by Rona Hill. Swallay and Silas were the lone occupants in the car.
Investigations revealed that the couple was arguing about an incident that occurred earlier Wednesday where a man allegedly struck the vehicle with a ‘chopping instrument’ before Silas drove away.
Silas reportedly told ranks that the man was following him and Swallay from De Kinderen, WCD.
Police reported that during the argument, Swallay, “allegedly grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to collide with a lamp post.” As a result, both her and Silas received injuries about their bodies.
The duo was transported to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where a doctor pronounced Swallay dead on arrival.
“A black and blue contusion above the right eye, a contusion to the right side of the head, and blood around the head and face were seen on the woman’s body,” police said in its report.
Silas underwent a breathalyzer test, which showed readings of 0.05 and 0.07 micrograms of alcohol, respectively. He was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Khalid Mandlall told Kaieteur News that a post-mortem examination (PME) conducted on Friday revealed that Swallay died from injuries to her head as a result of the accident.
