Kaieteur News- A former accounts clerk attached to the BK Group of Companies was charged on Wednesday with 12 counts of forgery.
The defendant, 22-year-old Stephanie Persaud, of Lot 151 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was released on $1.2M bail. Persaud allegedly forged several Citizens Bank cheques and illegally obtained $2.5M from her former employer, BK Group of Companies. The incident occurred between January and February 2025.
She appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Fabyo Azore, who read the charges. The first six charges were in relation to forging a Citizens Bank cheque, while the remaining six charges were in relation to her obtaining the money from forged cheques. Persaud was not required to plea.
The prosecution objected to bail, since the defendant admitted to the offences committed, reportedly saying, “Yes, sir, I did it.” It was further revealed that when she was arrested, a cheque and a quantity of cash were found in her possession. The prosecution told the court that Persaud is a flight risk.
Meanwhile, Persaud’s attorney, Nadia Samuels, requested that her client be placed on bail. Samuels added that she is unaware that her client admitted to the offence, since she received specific advice from the police. Magistrate Azore granted Persaud $100,000 bail for each of the 12 charges, which totaled to $1.2M.
