Dear Editor,
The recent assurance of United States supports to Guyana in the face of continuing aggression and provocation by Venezuela is most welcome and reassuring. According to US Ambassador Nicole Theriot, the United States stands ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with Guyana in the face of continuing aggression and provocation by the Venezuelan government. Such support is invaluable and sends a strong message to Caracas that the United States will not sit idly by and allow the Maduro regime to trample on the rights of the Guyanese people.
The United States is a major power both economically and militarily and such statements of support will no doubt have a sobering effect on the Maduro regime which continues to threaten our country. Guyana is today experiencing unprecedented levels of economic growth and prosperity which is in sharp contrast to Venezuela which is suffering from a severe economic and social crisis due largely to the undemocratic and authoritarian character of the Maduro regime.
The support of the United States for Guyana goes beyond the protection of its commercial and business interests in the country. It is more a case of shared values based on the rule of international law and respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity for all nations.
The Maduro regime is desperately and falsely seeking to project political and ideological motives regarding United States and western support for Guyana. This is clearly a smokescreen designed to cloak its nefarious intentions and gain some support from those perceived to be sympathetic to the left.
Thankfully, the Cold War mentality is now on the decline. The world is evolving to a rules-based society where national sovereignty, territorial integrity, democracy and human dignity are now paramount.
