Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh is one ting fuh go an buy sand, cement, an brick. Is anodda ting fuh pay dem man who suppose to use it. Dem boys hear how people complainin’ dat construction worker price now higher than de Marriott Hotel. De excuse? “Labour short, boss.”
But dem boys got eyes. De price been going up long before labour get short. Before dis, it had man sittin’ down whole day under mango tree waitin’ fuh wuk. You ask dem fuh throw a lil plaster pon de wall? Dem charging like dem got master’s degree in plastering. Now dat de oil money flowin’, dem tellin’ people, “Pay me more or watch yuh house stay foundation alone!”
Dem boys seh some of dem construction worker worse than gold miner. De more yuh beg, de more de price climbin’. One man seh he pay fuh a mason fuh build he fence, but de fence tek so long, de mason end up adding he children to de contract.
And dem boys know how it does go. Yuh pay fuh labour, den yuh still got to provide de tools, de lunch, an de rum. Yuh paying fuh de wuk, but yuh feelin’ like yuh sponsoring a construction carnival.
Dem boys seh people start learning trade now fuh fix up dem own house. Why? Because if yuh keep waitin’ pon dis kinda labour, yuh might haffi tek out mortgage just fuh build a front step.
But here de ting: de labour shortage is real, but dem boys seh de greed shortage is nowhere in sight. One man seh if de labour price go higher, he gon start building house wid imagination alone.
Dem boys seh Guyana turning into de land of opportunity, but only fuh dem who holding de trowel. De rest ah we gotta start praying fuh cheaper days or learn how to mix mortar!
Talk half. Leff half.
(De brick price high, de labour price higher!)
