Dear Editor,
It is with deep sorrow that the Alliance For Change extends our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Ameena Gafoor – to her husband, Sattaur Gafoor, children, family, and to the nation of Guyana. This distinguished Honorary Doctor of Letters, writer, and philanthropist whose life and work have left an indelible mark on our society, will always be remembered for her graciousness and simplicity.
Ameena Gafoor was a literary critic, writer, and philanthropist whose work has profoundly impacted Guyanese and Caribbean culture. As the founder and editor of The Arts Journal, she dedicated herself to promoting and preserving the literature, history, and culture of our region. Her commitment to the arts extended beyond the written word; she also championed the visual and theatrical arts, and her work has inspired and nurtured generations of artists and writers.
Ameena’s contributions to Guyanese letters are exemplified in her critical study, Aftermath of Empire: A Critical Introduction to the Novels of Roy Heath, and her poignant autobiographical work, A Lantern in the Wind: A Fictional Memoir, where she explored themes of family, history, and identity with profound insight. Her writings reflect a deep understanding of our society and the complexities of its history.
In addition to her literary achievements, Ameena Gafoor was a philanthropist whose generosity and commitment to social betterment touched countless lives. She played a pivotal role by establishing the Ameena Gafoor Institute, which advances research and scholarship on Indian indentureship and other critical areas of Caribbean history and culture. Her contributions extended beyond the literary world, as she used her resources to foster positivity and upliftment at every level of society. Ameena was instrumental in supporting educational initiatives, cultural preservation efforts, and community development projects, reflecting her deep love for her country and its people.
Ameena Gafoor’s legacy will continue to illuminate the path for future generations. Her life’s work stands as a testament to the enduring power of knowledge, culture, and community. The Leader of the Alliance For Change Nigel Hughes and the entire Party join the nation in mourning her loss and celebrating the remarkable contributions she made to our collective heritage.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
Regards,
Alliance For Change
