A Vietnamese real estate mogul who acquired wealth from corruption was sentenced to death last week by a court. It did not matter that the accused is a female. Death for fraud regardless of gender. A strong message needed to be sent to white collar criminals who enrich themselves off the backs of poor hard working people. She was the mastermind of the plot.
The female convict conned several individuals and government officials, some of whom were also part of the scam. Others who were with her in the plot were also convicted and given long sentences. Others are undergoing trial while more are awaiting a date for justice.
The female convict expressed remorse and told the court and the nation that she contemplated committing suicide after she was caught in the scam and didn’t want to undergo a trial. Vietnamese, like all Asians, are deeply embarrassed for engagement in immoral and fraudulent acts. They don’t like to carry the burden of shame for wrong doings.
There is no sympathy for the convicted corrupt mogul who the public feels has received the right sentence – death penalty – and it is hoped that it will send a strong message to others who are involved in corruption and other fraudulent schemes.
The judicial system in Guyana, the Caribbean, and other Third world countries should take a page out of the judgment in Vietnam against corrupt officials and business persons. In my travels around Guyana, Trinidad, and the Caribbean region as well as in India and several other Asian countries (including Vietnam where I visited last December), Africa, and Latin America, people viewed corruption as a serious problem afflicting their nations. Investigations are needed into corruption and indictment and prosecution if evidence exist. The convicted corrupt should be executed to send a strong signal that corruption would not be tolerated.
