Criminals are road-smart they know to manipulate the legal system

Dear Editor,

Robbery under arms, should be a non-bail offence but given written commitment to the accused that they will conclude by 180 working days.

Let me further appeal to the learned attorney general, that when a man or woman is attacked by an accused, under arms with a gun, cutlass, knife or what they believe is asset, the victim has little chance to avoid the robbery, he or she is forced to surrender and give up their hard earned property under the belief that if he or she does not comply, they will die as a result of the attack. So, robbery under arms doesn’t give the victim a chance to protect his or her property.

The attacker, knowing the present legal system, knows that if they are caught, they can plead not guilty and are entitled to be bailed, he/she then goes on a series of armed robberies, knowing fully well that if he/she is caught, all they have to do is plead guilty to the first offence, so they will get 5 years for each count of armed robbery, which will run concurrently under the legal system. If he/she commits six armed robberies, they will serve five years for each armed robbery, and when run concurrently, he/she will serve some 5 years, which is 45 months.

This would be very economical in the eyes of a career criminal under the watchful eyes of all former attorney generals, such as Mr. Fenton Ramsahoye, Mr. Fred Wills, Mr. Shridath Ramphal and presently Mr. Anil Nandlall, who are all brilliant minded people. Mr. Editor, I ask all legal minded experts to put their heads together and come up with a solution to this problem.
