Kaieteur Sports – The Lady Jags roared to a thrilling 1-0 win over Suriname last evening, when action in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers continued in Paramaribo.
Taking the stage at the Dr Franklin Essed Stadium, the Lady Jags displayed an evident boost in their strength and form compared to their previous matches against Dominica (5-0) and Antigua and Barbuda (1-2), thanks to the inclusion of key players, most notably Syndey Cummings.
Cummings, a 24-year-old defender, has recently inked a two-year contract with the Scottish Premier League side, Celtic FC, and she undoubtedly lived up to her reputation as one of the best centre-backs in the Caribbean during Guyana’s win over Suriname.
Cummings played a pivotal role in fortifying Guyana’s defence, ensuring that they maintained their advantage throughout the match.
Meanwhile, in the attacking department, former National U20 forward, Shanice Alfred, caused absolute havoc for Suriname with her relentless efforts.
It was Alfred who catapulted Guyana into the lead with a spectacular goal in the 41st minute, and the Lady Jags managed to preserve the lead until the final whistle.
This victory marks Guyana’s second consecutive win in the qualifiers, while it handed Suriname their first defeat, following their earlier victories against Dominica (4-0) and Antigua and Barbuda (1-0).
As a result of the win, the Lady Jags now sit atop Group A in the qualifiers, maintaining a narrow advantage with a goal difference of +1 over Suriname.
The anticipation is building as Guyana and Suriname are set to face off once more on October 29 in a match that could potentially determine which team from Group A will secure a coveted spot in the next round of the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers.
