Kaieteur News – Kirth Smith, a gold miner and father of five, was on Monday remanded to prison for robbery when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The 45-year-old man is accused of robbing Onessa Thorne of $1,000,000 in cash and a black purse to the value of $10,000 on October 16, 2023 at Water Street, Georgetown.
The accused pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Rondell Weever, and the charge was read to him. Smith’s attorney made an application for bail. However, the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of misleading information, the gravity of the crime and the penalty it attracts.
The prosecutor told the court that Smith gave police a Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD) address but when ranks arrived he was not at the location.
Notwithstanding, Smith’s lawyer claimed that the address the police visited belonged to his reputed wife but Smith resides on Durban Street, Georgetown.
The court refused bail. Smith is scheduled to return to court on November 20, 2023.
