Kaieteur Sports – In keeping with its mandate to local football, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) took a significant step towards advancing the sport in Guyana, with the launching of the 2023 School Holiday Grassroot Development Football programme yesterday at the GFF National Training Centre in Providence.
The programme will run throughout the month of August, this initiative aims to attract youngsters from all age groups, with the ultimate goal of bolstering club-level participation and nurturing talent for the national level.

Leading the launch were GFF President, Wayne Forde and Technical Director Bryan Joseph, showcasing the federation’s commitment to the programme’s success. With this ambitious grassroots football initiative, the GFF aims to ‘pave the way’ for a brighter future for football, while developing talented players and strengthening the sport’s foundations at all levels.
During the event, the GFF also demonstrated its support for grassroots football by distributing essential football development equipments to the nine regional associations. This assistance seeks to revive grassroots football in their respective jurisdictions.

According to Forde, the core objective of this programme is to expand the pool of players as well as strengthening the overall brand of football in the country. Covering all nine regional associations, the programme is expected to reach every interested boy and girl in every community. With a well-structured and engaging curriculum, the programme promises to be both enjoyable and informative.
Meanwhile, at these grassroot sessions, participants will be taught the ABC’s of the game, they will also be taught the importance of sports among our youth. During his featured speech, Forde expressed his vision of witnessing a surge in the number of young boys and girls playing football across the nation, believing that the holiday period provides an ideal opportunity for achieving this goal.
He also urged the presidents of the respective associations to execute this mandate with utmost diligence, emphasizing the importance of their commitment to the programme’s success. The funding for this endeavor comes from the groundbreaking M-FAP programme, launched back in 2020.
As the 2023 Grassroots Football programme unfolds, Forde expressed his anticipation of visiting the various grassroots initiatives in Bartica, Linden, Essequibo, Berbice, and Georgetown in the coming weeks, underscoring his continued support for the entire football fraternity.
