Kaieteur News – Police believe that a miner might have fallen into an old mining pit at Puttering Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven and drowned while on his way to meet a girlfriend.
The dead man identified as Jerome John, 53, reportedly left his boss’s camp around 18:00hrs on Friday and was never seen again until his remains floated up in the old mining pit on Sunday.
Police said that his boss, Sebastian Chase told them that John had left the camp to go meet a girlfriend.
“According to Chase, on Friday at about 18:00 hrs, John left camp, heading to ‘Top Side’ to see his girlfriend (identity unknown at this time). Thereafter, the victim did not return,” police stated.
At around 08:00hrs on Sunday another miner reportedly contacted Chase and told him that his worker’s body was seen floating in an old pit.
The discovery was immediately reported to police and ranks arrived at the scene around 11:00hrs.
Police reported that John’s body was seen floating face-up
“The body bore no visible wound, and due to the state of decomposition, the rank was unable to determine if there were any marks of violence”, police said.
Investigations continue.
