Kaieteur News – Alberttown police on Friday shot a lone bandit who invaded the Rio Night Club apartment building and robbed four Venezuelan Women of their cell phones.
Police identified the thief as Emmanuel Hawker, 23, of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The bandit is presently under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing a gunshot wound to his right leg.
Hawker reportedly invaded the women’s apartment around 12:00hrs.
A police release detailed that the suspect walked into the apartment building armed with a .32 Revolver.
“He pulled out a suspected .32 Revolver from the waist of his pants, then began to kick open the room doors, where the victims were, and pointed the firearm at them,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) stated.
Hawker then proceeded to relieve the four women identified as 27-year-old Maria Peraz, 21-year-old Jenineth Salozar and Karla Meza, and 35-year-old Jonan Fiqueroa of their cell phones.
According to police, the total value of the phones is approximately $166,000.
While robbing the woman, neighbours alerted police that a robbery was in progress. Police ranks from the Alberttown Police Station arrived promptly on the scene and were able to corner the bandit before he attempted to escape.
The bandit, in an attempt to elude the cops, fired shots at the cops but lost the duel and was eventually captured.
Persons from neighbouring buildings captured the shoot-out on video. The video seen by Kaieteur News showed the police arriving in a pick-up and armed ranks jumped out of the said vehicle.
Gunshots were heard and sent those persons in close proximity scampering for cover.
Spanish-speaking persons were heard in the background saying, “Van a matar un Venezolano vale [they are going kill a Venezuelan]”.
Police stated, however, that when the ranks arrived at the building, they saw Hawker walking with a gun in his hand and called on him to drop the weapon and surrender but he did not.
“…The suspect discharged three rounds in the direction of the police ranks, forcing them to take cover. One of the ranks returned fire at the suspect, hitting him on his right thigh,” police said. The bullet struck the suspect in his right thigh and he fell to the ground.
Police quickly took possession of his illegal weapon and recovered the victims’ cell phones from his pocket.
Hawker was taken to GPHC for treatment where he remains under police guard.
