Dear Editor,
During the past six years, Guyana has been invaded by several U.S. oil companies, in particular Exxon Mobil, Hess, and Esso, to name a few. The recent comments by John Hess, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hess Corporation that Guyana’s Head of State was ‘emphatic that a stay would be put in place’ following the High Court’s Order for Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) to provide an unlimited guarantee from its parent company is reprehensive, absurd, and downright foolish. Such callous statement is an insult to all Guyanese and should be of grave concern to all and sundry because the rule of law is being twisted to favour the interests of the oil companies.
What is even more bizarre is for the CEO of Hess Corporation to tell the nation that the judge did not understand what the petroleum legislation was, or the petroleum requirements of the production programs were, and our so-called president agreed with him. More importantly, President Ali and his honcho and de facto president who is the self-anointed oil expert need to explain why the Hess boss told the U.S Energy Conference that the President assured him that a stay of the full liability protection ruling by Justice Sandil Kissoon would be issued. His statement was issued before the Court of Appeal handed down its decision. John Hess even stated that he called the President to express his concerns about the recent court ruling. Accord to John Hess, our President assured him that based on the merits of the case, there was no reason why a stay could not be granted.
In his book ‘The West on Trial’ the founder of the PPP and avowed Marxist Cheddi Jagan declared in the mid 1950’s that the country should be called Bookers Guiana. Today, the PPP government is protecting the interests of the American oil giants and has abandoned those of Guyanese. Based on the government unequivocal and explicit support for the foreign oil companies, it is quite appropriate that the country could now be named EXXON Guyana. This is exactly what the honcho and de facto president has done to the citizens of Guyana. I salute the publisher of Kaieteur News Glenn Lall for standing up to these corrupt, crooked, and dishonest politicians. It is time for all Guyanese to rise and vote this government from office.
Regards,
Leyland Chitlall Roopnaraine.
