…Guyanese fell 1-4; will play the DR tomorrow
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – It wasn’t the start Coach Robert Fernandes had hoped for at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games Hockey tournament in the Dominican Republic.
Playing in their opening Group B match, Guyana fell 1-4 to Trinidad and Tobago in Santo Domingo.
Despite close scoring opportunities in the first period, neither team managed to find the net in the opening 15 minutes of play.
However, Teague Marcano, who would go on to score a hat-trick, broke the deadlock early in the second period with a Penalty Corner goal.
Just four minutes later, Javon Wren scored a field goal, extending Trinidad and Tobago’s lead to 0-2.
Guyana, already trailing, conceded another goal when Marcano converted another Penalty Corner, securing a 0-3 advantage for Trinidad.
Although Andrew Stewart (36′) managed to score Guyana’s solitary goal in the match shortly after his shot was saved, Marcano completed his hat-trick in the 41st minute, securing three crucial points for Trinidad in the group standings.
To keep their chances alive for advancing to the next round, Guyana must secure a victory in their upcoming match against the Dominican Republic tomorrow and their final Group B game against Cuba on Sunday.
Over in Group A of the Men’s CAC Hockey Championship, Barbados hammered El Salvador 14 – 0, and Mexico had a 3 – 0 win over Jamaica.
