Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – I am writing to draw attention to a distressing situation that has befallen the residents of who live in the vicinity of North Road and Light Street, Bourda.
The streets of this once quiet neighbourhood are now being converted at night into a den of degenerates – adult and child sex workers, undocumented immigrants, drug pushers and users and drunkards. Sexual solicitation has become commonplace, posing a threat to the upbringing of our young and impressionable children. The area is now being downgraded to that of an unsanitary, polluted urban ghetto with an array of negative effects. This dire situation is being compounded by violations of building codes, with premises being adapted for unauthorised uses. Some buildings have become dormitories for the most unsavory elements that are oblivious to the effects that their drug use and incessant playing of loud music are having on residents.
Violence is now a weekly occurrence, especially on Saturday nights when the whoring, drug use, and drunkenness turn ugly. Residents are finding it difficult to get a good night’s sleep because of these nefarious nocturnal activities. Complaints and other protestations are met with voluble and foul language and deadly threats. Even Sundays do not offer respite
I am kindly asking the authorities – City Hall, the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to rectify these issues, excise the gangrenous ulcers that now infect our area, eradicate the nightly illicit activities, including prostitution and children trafficking, and restore sanity and peace to the once idyllic neighbourhood.
Sincerely,
Concerned Resident of Bourda
