Apr 05, 2023 Letters
Dear Editor,
A letter from an association whose name is as vague like the WPA, “Association of Concerned Guyanese” in Kaieteur News March 30, 2023, caught my attention. It was a letter to rebut what (Leyland Roopnarine) wrote about the Speaker of Parliament captioned, “The Speaker of the House”. Firstly, who are these “Concerned Guyanese”?
I wondered so I Googled it and was sent to a Facebook page. There was a link on the page that I also Googled and it went to a blank page so I went back to their FB site. I saw some photos of PPP Executive members being felicitated while they were visiting New York and some reposting of various PPP activities and even some statements from the PPP reposted. It looked like it was a PPP group in New York City. I searched on the Concerned Group’s page for some issues that are affecting Guyanese in NY and so far, found none. Are there any activities that they did to help the lot of Guyanese struggling in the U.S? Like the present issue of the past and present Mayor not giving Hindu kids in NY a holiday on Phagwah or Diwali? The proverb “charity begins at home” will suffice.
These “Concerned Citizens” contradicted themselves as they said that the present-day Speaker is just following the trend by his predecessors. We are well aware that under the dictatorship of Burnham and the PNC Government, what the role of the Speaker of the House was. Who are the ones really ” attempting to question the professionalism and destroy the integrity of the Speaker of the Parliament?” Is Mr. Roopnarine correct when he expressed his right to free speech as he wrote about the present-day Speaker? I am also waiting to see/hear what these “concerned” citizens will do to help get Hindu kids in New York the right to be treated equally. Lastly, let us remember that the former Speaker, Barton Scotland, did not interrupt the no-confidence voting in 2018 when called upon to do that. So much for integrity.
Yours sincerely,
A Very Concerned Citizen in New York City

By Sir Ronald Sanders (Kaieteur News) – When the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was announced on 7th April, 2026, the immediate reaction across much of the world was relief.
