Dear Editor,
The yard had a lot of fruit trees and there was a half-built house on the land. I had spotted a big ripe guava and decided to climb the tree in the yard with the unfinished house. Perched comfortably on a branch high up, I dug my teeth into a ripe guava devouring half in one bite. My dietary needs were interrupted by a neatly dressed man calling out to the occupants of the house next door. The patriarch emerged and a conversation ensued. That was when I heard the man saying to the neatly dressed man, “I tell you already, he ain’t selling dis house and land!”
The neatly dressed man kept insisting telling him that he would give him an offer he couldn’t refuse. The owner went quiet momentarily and looked thoughtful. “Gimme a second, ah coming back.” he said. It happened in a split second. The owner had returned with a cutlass and was upon his unwanted negotiator. “Move from in front of meh blasted gate and doan come back!” The man turned to walk away, looking alarmed and confused at the same time. That was when the broadside of the cutlass land with force at the base of his back. He wriggled in futility, both of his arms trying to no avail to assuage the affected part. He shot off like a jet plane up the road. “Dis is me property, is me own! Run yuh….!” the owner angrily shouted after him.
The Ministry of Sports under Minister Charles Ramson has taken away the Mackenzie Sports Club from the people of Mackenzie, Linden. This happened at the behest of Kashif and Shanghai, two PPP sycophants who have tried for decades to gain full control of that facility. The duo who has, in the past, been rejected by the people of Linden, would have manipulated some executive members of that historic sports venue to agree to the government’s taking over of it. Some executive members do not approve but the government has gone ahead with the bullying and has released a public statement claiming full ownership. The government will build a modern sports facility there and that is welcomed, but why wrestle ownership away from the people of Linden. It has to do with the PPP’s quest to dominate and control with the view of making the populace bow to them to be a part of any local and national processes where citizens will be held at ransom, punished and be shutout if their views, beliefs and conviction are not in line with those of the dictatorial regime. Linden is known for standing up to the regime, but fear is being instilled in residents. They are hesitant to speak out openly because of fear of being victimised and targeted.
Minister Ramson is now being called upon to give back ownership and control of the Mackenzie Sports Club to the rightful owners. It belongs to the people of Linden. Ramson and his regime do not understand or will ever appreciate the historical relationship the people of Linden have with that venue that was gifted to them. He never spent his Christmas at the No Big Thing Show, or has he mourned the final viewing of friends, family and comrades who died under tragic circumstances in that town. He knows about his two PPP comrades football tournament and their undying allegiance to him and the PPP. The General Secretary of the Mackenzie Sports Club, Mr. Joe Chapman, has promised to sit down with VOD TV to tell the Guyanese world about the government’s taking over of that facility. I hope he tells it all so our people can understand and decide if an injustice has been done to the people of Linden.
My mind returns to the man and his land and the greedy and selfish negotiator and hope that the actions of the people of Linden in protest will result in a ‘broadside’ that will see Ramson, his two lackeys and the PPP running helter-skelter away from the Mackenzie Sports Club.
Sincerely yours,
Norman Browne
