Kaieteur News – Following in her mother’s footsteps, Sheanna Stanley-Nicholson wanted nothing more than to own her own business. It was something she always wanted to accomplish since her first attempt of owning a business was at the age of 22. Fulfilling her long awaited dream, Nicholson at the age of 28 is now the proud owner of a customising business called ‘Graphix and Tees’ which was launched in November 2020.
Recalling her journey to where she is now, the young woman in an exclusive interview with this magazine said that having graduated from Berbice High School in 2011, she shortly went on to work at Metro, first as a sales representative, and then as a cashier in graphics.
After leaving there, she then joined the Guyana Water Inc. where she worked as a cashier but later left. Shortly after, she decided to test the water at the age of 22 by owning her own business. She shared that she started an internet café business but, unfortunately, that did not work out, so she then again went back into the corporate world.
Eager to be her own boss, at the age of 26, it finally registered deep inside and completely that her desire was to own her business, so that is how her custom apparel business came about.
But what really pushed this young woman to be her own boss, she explained to this publication, was that her inspiration to starting her business was her mother. “I always knew I wanted to have my own business, but watching her build her business from the ground up was the biggest push for me,” she added.
According to Nicholson since being in the business arena for almost two years, the support she has been receiving has been overwhelming and this is thanks to her parents, siblings, husband and friends who have been there from the very beginning motivating her to keep going.
While the support for her business has been exceptional, it too has had its fair share of challenges. Just like many other young entrepreneurs, one of the biggest challenges she mentioned that she faced was acquiring startup capital. Not letting this stop her progress, she shared that she managed to overcome this, “with the help of God and family, and by making a lot of sacrifices and being disciplined.” Another challenge, she added was sourcing materials in Guyana, but this too was conquered. According to her, she did tons of research and getting to know people in the industry where she can now easily source materials.
While overcoming some of her challenges, she was asked what are the long-term goals for her business? Our featured entrepreneur shared that one, is to increase her profits and reduce the cost of production, and also to increase the diversity of her business brand and, lastly, to create employment opportunities for others.
Having a strong vision for the future of her business, Nicholson is of the view that entrepreneurship is very important because it can improve living standards and create wealth for entrepreneurs and related businesses in our country.
When asked what responsibility she thinks small business owners have in our society today, the young woman said, “Entrepreneurs also help drive change with innovation, where new and improved products enable new markets. They also can provide job opportunities and contribute to the economy of their country.”
Lastly, she suggests that to boost small businesses locally, is for both the private and public sector to work towards making it easier for small businesses to acquiring small loans with reduced interest rates.
