Kaieteur News – A lone car thief was on Wednesday caught on security cameras stealing a silver -grey Toyota Premio motorcar, PRR 9781, at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The car is owned by Chetram Sooknan and was reportedly stolen around 04:00hrs. Sooknan had parked the car around 20:00hrs on Tuesday in front of a house located at Melsha Road, Mon Repos. However, when the owner woke up the next morning it was gone.
Sooknan immediately made his way to the Beterverwagting Police Station and made a report.
An investigation was launched and Sooknan was able to obtain video footage from a security camera mounted on a building near to his home.
That footage was shared with Kaieteur News and it showed a lone car thief using tools from a haversack he carried to pry open the door of Sooknan’s car.
When he first arrived he walked up to the gate of the property and appeared to be scanning the yard to make sure that no one was there.
Then, car thief took out something from his haversack and made his way over to the car. With the tool he began shaking and rocking Sooknan’s car door at the driver’s end for almost two minutes. It appeared as though he was doing it in a way to avoid making any noise.
Next, the man made his way back to the gate where he scanned the yard one final time before returning to the car and finally opening the door.
He entered and within a matter of seconds the lights came on and the car drove off.
Sooknan has since made a Facebook Post calling on the public to assist him in finding his vehicle. He had purchased it back in 2016 for some $3.3M dollars, so to lose it now would be a major loss for him.
If anyone knows where his car may be or who might have stolen it, they are asked to make contact with telephone numbers 659-6773, 647-8756, or the nearest police station.
From September to now a total of 12 cars have been stolen, but the number may be much higher. Several car shells have been recovered and several suspects remanded as an investigation into a huge and well-organised carjacking ring continues.
Police are still trying to recover more stolen cars, but as they do their best the gang is still at work stealing more cars.
