GPF’s Mounted branch still key in crime fighting
Kaieteur News – In the 1960s, a troop commonly known as the Mounted Branch was created in the Guyana Police Force, (GPF), for the purpose of conducting patrol in the city with horses.

The Mounted Branch was formed back then to maintain order in the streets and crowd control during protests, strikes, shows etc. Fast forward some 60 years later, one would think that the Mounted Branch is no longer needed by the Force to fight crime but according to the officer-in-charge of the unit, Superintendent Rockwell Delph, horses still play a major role in crime fighting.
Delph made this known during on recent Podcast aired by the Force on its Facebook page. He related that apart from performances at Gymkhana and participations in parades, horses are still being used for patrols at Guyana’s borders and in its backlands.

“So let’s face the facts horses can go where vehicles can’t. ‘Cause I mean right now on the Corentyne (Berbice, Region Six) in the Black Bush Polder area, we have horses and a lot of the days when the guys patrol the savannah areas, you have to swim across a creek. You got to cross a creek to get to where you going and you sit on your horse and move on your horse and you get across the creek comfortably and you have no issue and you continue on your patrol”, Delph said.
The Superintendent related that over the years, the Mounted Branch section in some police districts have been closed but the Force have started to reopen them and listed some of the locations as Lethem, Region Nine and Mibucuri Black Bush Polder in Berbice.
Delph noted that since Mountain Branch was re-activated in those two areas, there has been some success in fighting crime. In Lethem, he said, ranks were able to arrest a wanted fugitive and at Mibucuri, they were able to foil several attempts of “cattle rustling (cattle theft)”. In fact, some 50 heads of stolen cattle were recovered by the Mountain Branch at Mibucuri since the Mountain Branch there was re-opened.
