Dear Editor,
Like many students fresh out of secondary school, I was inundated with the task of finding a career path. It was a task that I struggled with for quite some time until I was introduced to a turtle.
In front of me in the UG technology one that day, sat a computer. Its screen displayed an image of a small green turtle in the centre. The instruction from the professor was simple: using computer code, make the turtle move. While this assignment was simple, I now recognise the genius of our professor’s well-crafted syllabus. These assignments were expertly designed to inspire, without being too challenging. The reading material was intentionally vague to prompt independent research yet specific enough to encourage questions. He delivered his lectures which such passion and real-world insight that by the end of the semester, that turtle was capable of solving complex mathematical equations and playing games. That turtle helped me find my love for Computer Science.
Currently, that turtle has led me to become a Software Systems Architect of an international Fortune 500 company, designing, developing, and deploying complex applications, data pipelines, and artificial intelligence models that service a plethora of industries like finance, automotive, and renewable energy. While computer science is certainly my passion, I cannot forget the professors from other subject areas like Business, English, and Mathematics. Through their dedication, insightfulness, drive, and genuine love for their craft, I became equipped with the tools to represent myself and my country on an international stage at the bleeding edge of technology.
As the main tertiary educational institution in Guyana, UG has a long list of issues to resolve: the less than ideal accreditation internationally, poor equipment and facilities, and largely outdated administrative and academic policies, to name a few. Dispute this, my fellow UG alumni and I have an overwhelming consensus: through their passion, dedication, and proficiency in their respective subject areas, the professors at UG have inspired and equipped us to be pioneers in our respective fields.
Best,
Clifford Cheefoon
