The Guyana Community of Services is a NGO, non-profitable organisation that do different programmes to obtain funding for sports persons and others. The team comprise of Eugene Noel (chairman), Comedians Jumbie Jones and Rajan Tawari, former Athletics Coach and Boxer Leslie Black, singer Bill Rogers and founder ex-Athlete Joseph Ramkumar among others.
“The GCS was formed in 2016 to assist former Guyana Boxer Clive Atwell who fainted on October 24, 2015, during his bout for the FECARBOX World Boxing Council’s (WBC) lightweight title against Dexter Gonsalves.
“With the help of the GCS and Sports Journalists Sean Devers who himself underwent a Surgery for Brain Cancer and who exposed the Boxer’s plight with his articles in the Kaieteur News… Atwell went to the US for corrective cranial surgery,” informed Committee member Black who coached top local middle and long distance runners Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan among others.
Atwell’s 17-bout Professional career lasted from 2010 to 2015 and included 13 wins, seven losses and a draw.
Atwell challenged for the WBC featherweight title in 2014. As an amateur he won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games as a bantamweight.
Atwell’s issue sparked the formation of the GCS which has since embarked on several projects to help those in need of assistance.
The Raffle, which apart from the substantial first prise, has four consolation prises of a big Electric Bike (2nd prize), a small Electric Bike (3rd), a 32-inch Smart TV (4th) and a Smartt phone (5th).
“Tickets can be bought from all of Payless Variety Stores at Rose Hall Town, New Amsterdam, Vreed-in-Hoop and the Main Branch on Wellington Street Georgetown or you can me on 650-5868,” said Black. (Sean Devers)
