Kaieteur News – Guyana’s cosmetology industry in recent years has grown relatively popular and this is evident by the many emerging business ventures of this nature in our society today.
This industry, which has drawn the interest of many young people, has not only paved a way for more entrepreneurial opportunities but it has helped to change the lives of many. One individual, who was able to develop her skills and pursue a career in the cosmetology field, is Alisa Allicock-Elliott, owner and sole proprietor of ‘Chloe’s Nail Bar.’ Elliott, who was born and raised in Rupertee Village which is located in the Rupununi, Region Nine, but now resides in Georgetown, said that ever since she was a little girl, she had always had an interest in doing nails, makeup and hair styling. It was her strong passion for cosmetology and the desire to be an independent woman that really inspired her to be a part of the business arena. But none of this would have been possible, she said, if it was not for her father who played an integral role in her life to help. It was he, she said, who helped her pursue her dreams. “My dad encouraged me to become independent and provided the money I needed to get training and supplies,” she shared during her interview with Kaieteur News. To this day too, she said, he continues to provide support and encouragement. When asked what are some of her long-term goals for her cosmetology business, the young woman stated that she hopes to own a salon where she will have the opportunity to provide nail and other cosmetology services for clients. Thus far, her support base has been good as many persons have been utilising her services. Her nail bar which was launched in August 2020, just five months after the onset of the pandemic here. Indeed, this global event has caused its fair share of challenges on emerging businesses.
For Allicock-Elliott, the impact of the global pandemic made it difficult to attract clients. During that time lost, she pointed out that she was able to focus on “practicing my nail work, getting supplies, and helping friends with their nails.” This she said, helped to refine her talent in preparation for her clients. This talented young woman is of the opinion that entrepreneurs such as herself have an impactful role in society since they have been able to bring about and provide new services to their respectful communities, which in turn benefit others and encourage them to follow suit. She is of the firm belief that “young entrepreneurs can play an essential role in helping to develop a strong economy.” In making sure this unfolds in our society, the young woman highlighted that the Government could provide more services such as counselling, basic education and financial advice to young people who have an interest in launching their own business venture. Such investments she concluded, would not only be good but it would “easily pay for itself through increased employment and a growing tax base.” Looking to have your nails designed and styled for that special occasion or event, you can contact our featured young entrepreneur on (592) 609-9407 or via her Facebook page at Chloe’s Nail Bar.
