Guyanese not exercising enough care for pandemic – Ramsammy

Kaieteur News – Former Minister of Health and Advisor to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has affirmed that as it relates to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Guyanese are not exercising enough care for it and the measures put in place for their protection

. His remarks came in light of the country breaking its daily case toll record on Friday, whereas, 214 new infections were reported by the Health Ministry; this month also saw the monthly record for fatalities being surpassed with the death of two more people yesterday.
Dr. Ramsammy noted, in comments made to this newspaper, that contrary to popular belief, the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, yet persons continue to operate as though it is behind them. He said that in public transportation, citizens are not adhering to the relevant protocols, as well as in the markets. He spoke particularly to mask-wearing in the market area, stressing that even though some persons opt to wear a mask, it is not being done correctly since many are observed wearing it below their chin or their nose. “It will not protect you if it’s there,” he stated.
Further to that, he disclosed that the Ministry has expanded its testing to communities countrywide. “The numbers are still high,” Ramsammy said, adding that vaccination is a key component in protection from the virus. “Until we are able to give every citizen 18 years and older two doses, we have to recognise the virus is not going anywhere,” he posited.
The Ministry of Health via its daily dashboard yesterday reported some 152 new COVID-19 infections, which is also among the highest of numbers Guyana has seen since the start of the pandemic. It also shows that 16 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, another 11 in institutional quarantine, 74 in institutional isolation and 1,529 in home isolation. The total number of recoveries is now 10,702 with 83 new recoveries recorded yesterday.Kaieteur News would have recently reported on the alarming increase in infections and deaths, which Guyana has seen since last month, with an average of over 62 infections and two deaths being recorded daily. The Ministry reported four new fatalities yesterday via a Press statement. The deceased persons were listed as a 60-year-old woman from Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne); a 65-year-old woman from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice); and two men, a 72-year-old and a 42-year-old, both from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). It was stated that all four died while receiving treatment at a Ministry medical facility.
On Thursday, April was tied with last October as the deadliest COVID-19 month, with 44 deaths. However, with the two new deaths recorded yesterday, April is now the sole deadliest month since the start of the pandemic and with six more days left in the month and a daily average of two cases, that number is still expected to increase and can possibly touch 58. Guyana’s overall COVID-19 death toll is now 281.
