Ifill leads Regal Masters to Championship honours
By Sean Devers

The winning Regal Masters take time out for a photo after their triumph in the GCB Tropical Spring Over-40 T20 final yesterday.
Regal Master romped the seven-wicket victory over West Demerara Masters to clinch the GCB/Tropical Spring national over-40 T20 tournament at the Everest ground yesterday to bag the $250,000 and the Winner’s Trophy, while the runners-up collected $100,000 and a Trophy.
Chasing the 119- 8 made by West Demerara Masters from their 20 overs, Regal Masters, led by a rapid 36 with three fours and a six from Anthony Ifill and 35 from Chien Gittens which was decorated with three boundaries, galloped to 120-3 in 16.5 overs.
Ifill and Gittens carried the score to 60 without loss in seven overs before Gittens and Roy Persaud (0) departed in the space of a run to leave Regal Masters on 61-2.
Ifill, who enjoyed a good all round game then departed at 75-3 before Ejaz Mohammed (26) and David Dick (17) saw their team to what turned out to a comfortable win with 19 balls to spare.
West Demerara Masters were spearheaded by 29 with two sixes from Chabiraj Ramchand, 24 from Ganesh Persaud, 27 from Ramesh Thakur, 13 from Elroy Fernandes and 10 Deoram Persaud.
Ifill, the leading all-rounder in the competition, had 2-11 while Dick took 2-12.
Earlier, after overnight and early morning showers left wet areas inside the 30-yards circle resulting in the game, scheduled to commence at Noon, eventually beginning at 13:45 in glorious sunshine.
West Demerara Masters batted first on a good track and fairly fast outfield and were given a steady start by Thakur and the left-handed Persaud.
The pair batted solidly with Thakur in particular, playing some neat shots off his pads while he looked solid and played some lovely drives but just after the fifty was posted disaster struck when a well-set Thakur was run out at 53-1 in the 10th over.
Ramchand joined Persaud who was trapped in front to David Dick one ball later in the next over as the team from the West side, urged on by a small but vocal support group due to Covid-19 protocol, slipped to 54-2.
With pulsating music coming from the stand populated by the small gathering of West Demerara supporters which included Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie, who hails from West Bank Demerara, the burly Elroy Fernandes joined Ramchand before rain stopped play at 56-2 in 11 overs.
When play resumed the pair pushed to score to 85 before Ifill struck twice in two balls to be on a hat-trick.
Ifill who peppered the batsmen with short balls, bowled the attacking Fernandes with a perfect yorker before trapping Patrick Khan LBW playing back to a ball that seemed to clip the inside edge.
Four runs later Skipper Sudesh Persaud (1) was bowled behind his back as he missed a sweep at Eion Abel at 89-5 in the 16th over.
Prahalae Singh was bowled by Gittens for a duck at 90-6 before Ramchand, who deposited Lyndon Lyght for six to post the 100 in theb17th over, added 22 for sixth wicket with Deoram Persaud who was bowled by Abel, while Ramchand fell to Lyght in the final over.
