The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) has provided the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) with a list of its Members of Parliament and the members of the Regional Democratic Councils.
The party managed to gain a majority of 33 seats in the National Assembly, against 31 for the APNU+AFC coalition, and one for the tripartite joinder.
The PPP/C noted that Ministers Oneidge Walrond and Robeson Benn were not on the PPP/C’s Nomination Lists. Hence, they were appointed as technocrats, as the law provides.
The list includes 12 persons from the PPP/C’s Geographic List and 21 from the National Top-Up List.
“Included in the 33 Members of Parliaments (MPs) are six medical doctors, four attorneys at law, economists, administrators, as well as activists from the labour movement, practitioners in broadcasting and the media, and the business community.”
In addition to the Ministers of Government, the party’s list includes Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Yvonne Pearson Fredericks, Faizal Jaffarally, Sanjeev Datadin, Seepaul Narine, Dharamkumar Seeraj, Bhagmattie Veerasammy, Dr. Tandika Smith, and Lee Williams.
Other notable inclusions on the list are as follows: former Health Minister, Bheri Ramsaran, who was fired in 2015 by the then President Donald Ramotar for verbally assaulting and threatening a female activist; Dr. Jennifer Westford, who was once a subject of a series of larceny charges over theft of more than $600M in public funds; and Alister Charlie who is accused of a sex crime with a teenager.
According to the PPP/C’s release, the team represents the “diversity of Guyana…”
The party said it is preparing to name its Parliamentary Secretaries.
As for the RDC list, the PPP/C said that it represents “a diverse combination of new, young and seasoned women, youth, farmers, teachers, technicians, businessmen, and religious leaders.”
