With the introduction of golf in the heart of Georgetown on Woolford Avenue through the collaboration with Scouts Association of Guyana and Nexgen Golf Academy & Driving Range, the sport has achieved many milestones in a very short time.
Adding to the momentum was the addition of the Guyana Teachers Union as a partner in promoting the game to their 11,000+ teachers with the eventual goal of reaching thousands of school children.
Mark Lyte, President of GTU was happy to join forces with the Golf Academy, “We as teachers are at the forefront of learning and we must lead by example. From the tremendous discipline required to learn the game and the opportunities it opens to all, we see this as a perfect scenario for teaching and learning.”
General Secretary Coretta Mc Donald says one of their main functions is to keep pushing for new avenues of teaching, especially in this new era of social distancing and the effect its having on education and sports. “Golf allows our kids and families to safely exercise, learn and have fun in a manner that conforms with the guidelines that we must adhere to in order to function. We seek out avenues that provide the most interesting manners of achieving our teaching goals in the safest way.”
“The Golf Academy & Driving Range will soon expand to encompass a complete state of the art putting green with several sand bunkers to challenge the skills of beginners and seasoned players,” according to Director Rudy Ramalingum. “We will also look to add a swing analysis system along with the other aspects of learning.”

President of the Guyana Golf Association Aleem Hussain said, “For too long we have lagged behind our fellow CARICOM sister countries in the development and competitiveness of golf, especially at the junior level, and we believe that our country has the potential to compete at the highest levels, all the way to the Olympics.”
With the emphasis on younger women and children, the Academy has seen almost 300 new players start the game in the past two months, taking part in competitions and kids golf camps hosted by Coach Colin Ming, and sponsored by Guyana Beverages (Distributors of Chubby and Oasis Water), Assuria, CIMGRO, AR Printery and many others.
Last weekend’s competition saw former Guyana Open men’s Champion Mike Mangal and newcomer Michelle Codrington taking top honors in the Survival Shopping Complex tournament. The Academy plans on hosting weekly events that will feature lots of prizes including motorcycles and possibly even a brand new car later in the year!
The low rates will soon be enhanced by special offers from Mon-Thurs such as Breakfast Included with early morning play and Complimentary Lunch from 11-2pm. “This is being done for two reasons, giving great value and allowing us to ensure that we space out our guests to adhere to social distancing guidelines,” according to Rudy Ramalingum.
The Golf Academy & Driving range offers classes for players of all ages and levels and guarantees that within 15 minutes, a newcomer to the game will be able to make proper contact with the ball and start having fun.
