DEAR EDITOR,
The new Government has committed itself to the reopening of the closed sugar estates, the reinstatement of Community Service Officers in Indigenous villages and has replaced the word “Indigenous” with “Amerindian” in the naming of the Indigenous Ministry. It appears as though the vision of the government for Guyana is to undo what the previous government has done whatever the consequences to the citizens of the country.
Everyone knows that the sugar industry was non-profitable when the PPP demitted office in 2015 and required regular bail out which was sucking the life out of our economy hence the closure of some estates by the previous government. No feasibility study was done or new model for the industry was adopted by the new government before this decision was made. We don’t want our oil money used to upkeep a failing industry just to find work for people loyal to the PPP party.
Before 2015 Community Service Officers were employed by the PPP government. The officers had no clear mandate and can just be seen walking around the Communities aimlessly and waiting for salaries. Presently in most Indigenous Villages youths have their own businesses which were acquired through the HEYS programme executed by the Coalition government.
