Justice Singh is not backing down
DEAR EDITOR,
The Sunday’s cartoon in Kaieteur News (April 26, 2020) is distasteful.
It has nothing to do with the cartoonist trying to make a point about the election being messy and President David Granger and GECOM Chair Justice Claudette Singh are in a field of flowers, skipping along as they hold each other’s hand, with their free hand each holding a roll of toilet paper, heading towards a pit latrine.
There is a suspicious looking cylindrical object hidden under Justice Singh’s blazer that is sticking out which doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
Among the more decent interpretation people can have from this cartoon is the cartoonist is seeking to suggest Justice Singh’s slip or underwear is showing. It is unusual to see the slip showing from the hemline not the waistline.
A woman of Justice Singh’s stature this style of dressing is unlikely.
This lady is always well dressed. She is known for her soberness in attire and has upheld this all the years, in the fine historical tradition of a lawyer and judge.
Dressing with your underwear or underclothes out is never considered decent even though modern trend may suggest otherwise. I find the cartoonist’s depiction offensive to Justice Singh and all professional women whom she has always stood out as an exemplary representative of. It saddens me the newspaper has moved from calling Justice Singh “Fraudette” in the ‘Dem boys seh’ column to now depicting her in a manner that for her and many other would be seen as crude and vulgar.
Editor, this is a woman with class and dignity.
It is because of her principles, integrity and for respecting the rules of law in her role as GECOM Chairperson has cause many to put out un-tastefully statements and making lawless accusations. By doing so, they think they would tarnish her reputation and she will back down. (NEWS FLASH SHE AIN’T BACKING DOWN!
