DEAR EDITOR,
Considerable coverage has been given to the “Dogs of War” commentary by the former Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Major-General (retd) Joseph Singh, who claims loyalty to the Constitution and the nation, and not to any political party or group, but nevertheless places President David Granger in command of these dogs, either through weakness, ineptitude, manipulation or Machiavellian design.
It could be viewed, unless the General chooses to clarify his intemperate and demeaning remarks, that he views a solitary citizen of Guyana and members of the legal fraternity as dogs, and the resort to adjudication in the courts, by some, as war.
I do not recall that the General was similarly agitated when other citizens and lawyers utilised the very legal process that he demeans today, and he did not challenge the PPP/C Leader or hold him responsible for any actions then, nor for the post-election intimidation of GECOM personnel, public intimidation, abuse, protests, destruction of property and assault on the security forces and school children.
What seems to concern the General most appears to be the injunctions before the court, for which there is the insinuation that President Granger is personally responsible, and which, for the moment, has forestalled the risk of rejecting these elections, which seems to be the goal of many, including those who insist that they won the elections fairly.
If the legal advice by GECOM’s Legal Advisor and the State Counsel is judged to be sound, then it would have been irresponsible and corrupt to proceed with the CARICOM-Granger-Jagdeo agreement for a total recount and not to declare the final results of the election within the constitutionally-mandated time, and thereby providing legal and technical grounds for voiding these elections.
I consider the recent comments by Sir Shridath Ramphal, JFAP, ACDA and others of similar conviction, that our sanity and survival as a nation demand that the CARICOM-supervised total recount of these elections must be undertaken as soon as possible and according to the law, to be helpful at this time.
Major-General Singh’s comments, which have, intentionally or unintentionally, dispelled any notion of impartiality, objectivity or respect for the rule of law are not and, I suspect, were not intended to be.
Sincerely
Oscar Dolphin
