DEAR EDITOR,
The stuck in the mud approach to politics in Guyana is once again on National and international display. This head in the sand not an inch of give and take can only serve to damage or country on the national, ethnic and world stage. More importantly, the example from our leaders to the divided population Afro and Indian Guyanese in particular is one that can only serve to exacerbate the divide that has plagued our country for far too long. To sit back and wait for the court or the election body to impose a solution is an example of weak and spineless leadership devoid of initiative. Is it so difficult for the political class to appreciate the long term damage the winner take all approach has visited on our nation? No one wins, what this approach produces is what we have now, a divided nation ready for exploitation by the greedy and pernicious. When will we truly fulfill and live out our motto of ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny’? I am of the belief that former leader of the PNC, the Late Honorable LFS Burnham, missed an opportunity back in the day when he opted to align his party with the United Force rather than the PPP. I fear that very opportunity is being squandered right now. HARD DECISIONS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE EASY BY THEIR VERY NATURE, BUT THEY ARE NECESSARY! The time to make a hard decision is now. The coalition in the form of the PNC or the PPP will not accept any decision that does not go their way. What do we have left? Entrenched hate and division, the advantage and the emphasis here is not, or should not be about who controls the proceeds from oil but the all important need to heal our Nation. I have listened to voice clips sent to me from friends in Guyana and the incendiary hate was enough to make me throw up! We cannot and must not continue down this road, Guyana simply cannot afford it. I Maybe a Guyanese American but I have never lost sight of the fact that I am a GUYANESE FIRST and always, one who knows firsthand the effects of a bomb being thrown into my parents home in 1963 and my being alive by the grace of God after removing myself minutes before from the area in the home where the device came to rest, exploding with devastating consequences. The time for VISIONARY LEADERSHIP IS NOW! The Leadership of the PNC and the PPP MUST sit down at the table and hammer out a solution. This Black and Indian nonsense Must Stop and the leadership Must come from the Top. How many Indians in Guyana can claim pure Indian blood? Conversely, how many Afro Guyanese can claim pure African blood? We are a hybrid Nation and cannot exist without each other. This does not mean we have to invite the street to eat roti or enjoy metem every Saturday, but we can all least respect each other.
On a closing note, I think it was reprehensible that the Native Leader had difficulties entering the court dressed in his native garb. What are we saying to him and his people, the first people no less. This is where leadership could have made a profound difference by making a phone call to allow him to enter the court rather than being a spectacle outside the courtroom.
WILL THE REAL LEADERS PLEASE STAND UP? Guyana is waiting!
Respectfully,
Claudeston G. Massiah
