DEAR EDITOR,
I don’t know why it is taking the government so long in dealing condignly with this bully of a company. First off they are alleged to have been retailing duty free fuel to the public. By this time the GRA would have closed down any local company doing same. In Russia Putin would have long ago jailed the directors/managers and closed down the business.
When we remember Khodorkovsky we wonder what this government is doing with these people. On a recent visit to the Kwakwani area a few days ago, I found a resilient people who are willing to go head to head with the management of the company. The people are not afraid of the layoffs. They are willing to take over the company and run it even better providing government looks for the markets for the product.
Kwakani is principally a logging community and they will survive Rusal. What they urgently need are some medium scale wood processing factories where kiln dried lumber can be produced and high-end furniture assembled for external markets. NICIL needs to look in to this community urgently and see what forms of assistance they can render the people immediately. People with great industrial skills reside in the community and with good organizing they will overcome Rusal.
The GRA needs to look into the allegation of the sale of the duty free fuel. If found to be true they need to start seizing Rusal equipment and also fining them huge sums of money to compensate for the loss of revenues. A salutary example must be made of these people. If we are truly a sovereign state then our state apparatus must act NOW.
Regards,
Cyril Walker
