Guyana’s 2020 Tokyo games hopeful, Arinze Chance, got his season off in fantastic fashion after winning the men’s 300m final at his University of South Carolina’s (USC) Gamecock opener in Columbia.
Chance, who turns 24 tomorrow, ran a blistering 33.08 seconds in the race that was competed at the USC’s remodeled Indoor Track and Field Complex, eight hundredths of a second slower than his personal best; Guyana’s national 300m indoor record that he set at this same event a year ago.
The South Carolina senior who is majoring in Global Studies; specialising in leadership and economic development, finished ahead of Savien Hayes of Norfolk State who finished second in 33.87 seconds and Ashtin Knowles of Clafin who came in third in a time of 34.99s.
Out of lane five, Chance started the race strong in the difficult 200m track and by the time he completed his first lap, he was comfortably ahead and the former Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) athlete cruised to the finish line.
This result will do much for Chance’s confidence as he aims to qualify not only for the Olympics but the World Championships as well in 2020.
