Police in Region Six (Upper Corentyne) have arrested five suspects in connection with the murder of the owner of the Sunsplash Hotel and Bar, Vivekanand Brijbassi, called “Veka”, 71, and his workman Harry Persaud Prashad, 59.
According to a police source, the suspects were arrested based on interviews done by investigators around the village where the murders took place (62 Village).
Autopsies conducted on the bodies which were in an advanced state of decomposition revealed that they died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries.
The Postmortem was conducted by Government Pathologist, Nehaul Singh, at the Anthony’s Funeral Home, West Coast Berbice on December 31, 2019.
Brijbassi and Prashad were found by a friend who ventured to the hotel located near the Number 62 Beach shoreline a week ago. Their bodies were found in the upper flat tied up and decomposed with parts of their bodies missing.
Some of Brijbassis toes and a foot for Prashad appeared to have been hacked off by the perpetrators who executed the beastly crime. The entire two-flat building was also ransacked.
The hotel owner, who was a Canadian citizen, had returned to Guyana in early December. He was staying at his hotel with the worker who was employed as a watchman when Brijbassi was overseas. He had returned to Guyana with the hope of refurbishing the building to make it operable again. His intentions were to install a security system as part of the new addition and upgrades.
Brijbassi’s sister, Krishna Boodram, told Kaieteur News that the last time she saw her brother was on December 16, last, when he visited her at Number 63 Village, and they ate dinner together.
She said that her brother told her that he was going to stay at the hotel with two other friends, including Prashad.
It is unclear who the third person was and whether the police have located that individual.
