At Bar admission, Chevy Devonish described as a “scholar for the law”

Journalist Chevy Devonish is now an Attorney-at-Law. Devonish was admitted to the Bar, Tuesday. His petition was accepted by Chief Justice Roxane George, S.C who charged him to continue being a scholar for the law.

Justice George told a gathering of well wishers that not only has Devonish committed to being a scholar. “He continues to do so for the scores of law students he tutors at the University of Guyana.
The Chief Justice expressed confidence that Devonish’s commitment to excellent work will continue.
During the brief admission ceremony, Justice George paid tribute to the late former Chief Justice Ian Chang, S.C, who lost his battle with cancer last week. Justice Chang was laid to rest on Tuesday.
Justice George remembered him as a stellar practitioner of the law who worked relentlessly to expand Guyana’s jurisprudence.
She urged Devonish to take a page out of Justice Chang’s book.
Devonish was reminded by Justice George of the importance of conduct and attitude as well as honesty, integrity and professionalism. She urged him to maintain them, even in trying times and in respect to the oath, he has taken to serve the people of this nation.
“Whether you like it or not; you are a role model to your students. Let them have positive things to say about you always.”
Devonish’s petition was presented by Senior Counsel Stephen Fraser, who said that his client’s admission will vastly enrich the standard of practice at the Bar.
Fraser told the gathering that Devonish’s love for law has taken him several places. He said that it even landed him at the Caribbean Court of Justice, the nation’s highest court, where he worked as a Research Assistant.
In his address to the court, Devonish credited his mother for his success. He described her as his foundation and said he is forever indebted to her for the many sacrifices she made along his journey. The lawyer’s role model is none other than Professor Duke Pollard, former Judge of the CCJ, who taught him during his academic journey.
According to him, his passion to pursue law began in 2014. He had already worked two years in the media and was tasked with covering Parliament and press conference.
However, Devonish realised that he did not know enough about his related beats; hence his decision to pursue legal studies. The breadth of law is immeasurable, and Devonish admits that he has a lot more to learn.
Devonish graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School on Saturday, October 6, 2019, with a Certificate in Legal Education (CLE), the final academic qualification to become eligible to practise law in the Caribbean and Commonwealth region. Based on reports, although he was not the school’s best graduating student, he was named Valedictorian due to his academic strengths and ex-curriculum accomplishments.
During his time as law school, Devonish served as Vice President of the Students’ Representative Counsel from 2018-2019 as well as the representative to the Guyanese class of 2018-2018. He also contributed to the school’s official newsletter, the Gavel. Further, he served two terms as President of the University of Guyana Law Society.
On his LinkedIn account, Devonish describes himself as a Constitutional and Human Rights Law Enthusiast. He currently serves as Chairman of the Guyana National Youth Council’s Constitution Reform Committee, and has contributed to the country’s Steering Committee on Constitutional Reform.
Devonish also holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and has written several letters to the editors concerning legal issues in Guyana.
