DEAR EDITOR,

The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) joins with the rest of the World in observing United Nations Day which was observed on October 24 to coincide with the date in which the United Nations came into being in 1945.
This is a good time to reflect on the role played by the United Nations in the preservation of world peace and human development.
The theme for this year’s UN Day is ‘ Climate Action for Peace’ which is very relevant in today’s world characterised by extreme and unpredictable weather patterns. This unstable weather pattern has resulted in numerous deaths and a countless number of people who were forced to abandon their homes due to floods, wildfires and other forms of natural disasters.
The Guyana Peace Council takes this opportunity to commend the efforts of the United Nations and other international bodies to draw attention to the dangers of carbon emissions beyond acceptable limits. The future of humanity is in jeopardy unless all nations, in particular the leading industrial powers take immediate measures to lower greenhouse emissions in their respective countries.
In this regard, the Guyana Peace Council endorses the decision taken by the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres to convene a Climate Action Summit based on the fact that peace today faces a new danger, namely, climate emergency which threatens our security, our livelihoods and our lives.
It is therefore imperative that people all across the globe join hands in the struggle for a secure and peaceful world.
